Drugs Contribute to Impotence

Impotence (erectile dysfunction) is the inability to achieve and maintain an erection sufficient to permit satisfactory intercourse. It is common, affecting to some extent, 50% of all men over the age of 40 years and the majority of men over 60 years old. Most men with impotence suffer in silence and embarrassment. It can lead to great unhappiness and depression and can cause major problems in relationships. Many men with coronary heart disease are impotent to some degree. This may be due to their age or the narrowing process in the arteries to the penis. It also can be caused by drugs administration. Yes, it is true that drugs can cause impotence in men.

Almost any drug, or just knowing that you have a heart condition that necessitates taking a drug, may cause or contribute to impotence. Some groups of drugs given to either prevent or treat patients with coronary heart disease are particularly likely to cause impotence. These are:

  • Beta blockers (drugs ending in “–ol”), which are used to treat high blood pressure, angina, and heart failure and are also given to patients after heart attacks.
  • Thiazide diuretics (water tablets, which end in “-ide”), which are used to treat high blood pressure.
  • Statins (drugs ending in “-statin”), which are used to lower a high cholesterol level and are also given to patients with narrowing of the arteries.
  • Angiotensin converting enzymeinhibitors, or “ACE inhibitors” (drugs ending in “-pril”), which are used to treat high blood pressure and coronary or other types of arterial blockages.

Besides drugs, impotence is also more common in men who smoke and who have high blood pressure, diabetes, and high cholesterol. It may be caused by alcohol. Most men with impotence have at least one of these risk factors.
