Body Mass Index (BMI)

Body Mass Index (BMI) is used as a measure of obesity. It is calculated by dividing your weight in kilograms by your height in meters. How does BMI measure my obesity? Check these followings:

BMI = 18.5 – 24.9 kg/m2 means Normal

BMI = 25 – 29.9 kg/m2 means Overweight

BMI = more than 30 kg/m2 means Obese

Haven’t quite understood yet? Let us see this example, a man weighing 70 kgs (154 lbs) and who is 1.9 m tall would have a BMI of 19.4 kg/m2 which is normal.

A people whose BMI is over 25 are likely to have a high cholesterol level, diabetes, and high blood pressure. Compared to thin people, they are much more likely to get coronary heart disease and suffer from angina, heart attacks, heart failure, and strokes. They are also more likely to get aches and pains in their back, hips, and knees and find it difficult to exercise.

While a BMI exceeding 30 is a serious medical condition. People with this Body Mass Index are often depressed and may not enjoy life. They are often breathless. Obese people often snore and stop breathing for periods when they sleep (sleep apnea). This is usually cured by losing weight.
